Valparaíso - Casablanca Valley Sustainability

Sustainability

Casablanca is a pre coastal valley that’s located in the V region of Chile between the Coastal Mountain Chain, formed 180 million years ago, and the Pacific Ocean. In a straight line, it’s 18 kilometers away from the ocean and crosses Chile transversely. It runs from east to west for approximately 24 kilometers (from the Zapata tunnel to the Lo Vasquez Sanctuary) covering a total of 22.000 hectares of land. It is crossed like a backbone by Route 68, highway that connects Santiago with the port of Valparaiso, one located 80 kilometers away while the other only 40 kilometers, the same distances as the city of Viña del Mar.

The valley is known for the diversity of its soil (mostly clay) formed by the decomposition of the Coastal Mountain and river materials.

The cool climate of the valley presents a characteristic morning mist with diverse temperatures during the day and night that favor the growth process of the grapes. The mesoclimate and microclimate of Casablanca are qualified as a cool climate with an oceanic influence, which brings a morning fog that fades away during the afternoon as the temperature rises. The cool breeze comes from the Pacific Ocean determined by the Humboldt Current coming from the Antarctic that moderates drastically the temperatures of the valley.
During the summer, the average temperature is 25ºC and the annual average is 14ºC. It usually rains between May and October, being September and October high risk months for crops to be seriously damaged by severe frosts.

Harvest season starts during mid March to the end of April, without a doubt all of these peculiarities make Casablanca unique in every way and the wines that the valley provides are outstandingly superior with a high concentration of fruit, great acidity and an elegant final touch.

The valley has more than 5.000 hectares of crops that count with the latest technology such as frost control towers, dripping irrigation and a high control of grape quality. Casablanca has managed to position itself around the world as one of the best valleys to produce premium cool climate wines. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this Great Wine Capital
